It was a roll call of stars in the Nigeria film industry last Monday in Port Harcourt, as the newly formed Nollywood Comedy Club made its debut in the Rivers State capital.
Victor Osuagwu, Maureen Ihunwo, Silas Momen, Klint da Drunk, Muma Gee, Chinwetala Agu, Lawrence Uche Lawrence and a host of others were on parade as the new comedians’ group came to take root in the budding films capital after Lagos.
President of the Nollywood Comedy Club, Ugochukwu Orikaoha (aka Silas Momen) and secretary, Chief Victor Osuagwu said though the club was formally unveiled on April 5, 2017 in Lagos, it was only natural to also unveil it in Port Harcourt given that the idea that gave rise to the club was first mooted in the oil city.
Orikaoha and Osuagwu said entertainers, especially comedians, lack a base to effectively drive their aspirations and special needs. The Nollywood Comedy Club seeks to provide this needed platform, as well as create an avenue for budding and new talents to aspire to greater heights.
Already, the club has registered over 6,000 new members, as well as began work on a 25-episode project.
“Our dream is to set a standard for others to follow. We are creating a platform where anybody can be given a chance to be what he or she wants,” they said.
The Nollywood Comedy Club, Orikaoha and Osuagwu said, intends to bring comedy and entertainment to all parts of the country, and we are already working on projects that will span Lagos, Port Harcourt, Uyo and other cities as well as set up chapters of the club in the Diaspora.
Osuagwu, who constitute the club’s 4-member board, alongside Orikaoha Oputa Ugochukwu Odili and Klint da Drunk Ejimba, described Port Harcourt as growing entertainment hub, capable of rivaling Lagos in time to come.
“I believe that Port Harcourt has enough talents and opportunities, and is capable of being an entertainment hub. Part of our objective is to choose te gap between the Lagos and Port Harcourt movie scenes,” Osuagwu said.
Also part of the club’s objective is the training and mentoring of new and budding talents in the art of film production and other related arts, such as scripting, and others.
This pursuit of developing raw talents perhaps, informed the club’s partnership with Don Waddel Entertainment and Riverman Group, whose chairman/CEO, Chief (Engr) Waddel Torru, described youth development as crucial to the drive to curb youth restiveness and youth-related vices.
Torru said his company is committed to working with the Nollywood Comedy and Club to ensure that youths are given a chance to life.
