THE OLUGBENGA ADEPOJU EFFECT: RIVERS STATE IS WINNING  WAR ON CRIME AND INDISCIPLINE

By: Amb. Ozimede Izuagbe Peter

There are moments when leadership ceases to be paperwork and becomes presence. When a Commissioner does not just sit in an office, but walks the streets, feels the pulse of the people, and forces discipline into the system by example. That moment is now in Rivers State. The name written across  is the Commissioner of Police Olugbenga Adepoju Adewale PSC, MNIPS.

Under his watch, the Rivers State Police Command has become a movement. A movement forged on steel resolve, human dignity, and a police force that finally feels like it belongs to the people. Rivers people now call it “The Adepoju Effect” — a visible, thrilling transformation that is saving lives and restoring pride.

CP Adepoju took charge and set a doctrine that shook the command: zero tolerance for indiscipline. Overnight, the culture of “looking the other way” collapsed. Officers now know the uniform is not a license, it is a sacred responsibility. Internal monitoring has teeth. Misconduct is confronted, corrected, and sanctioned without fear or favour.

That decision changed the atmosphere on Rivers roads. The loud, disrespectful voice at stop points has been replaced with measured professionalism. Sloppy posture has given way to alertness. Citizens now see officers who stand straight, speak respectfully, and serve with pride. When a police force polices itself first, the public begins to believe again. That belief is the most powerful weapon against crime.

But CP Adepoju did not stop at policy. He became the policy. In unscheduled tours that stunned the command, he took professionalism to the streets. From Port Harcourt to the East-West Road, from GRA to Obio-Akpor, he appeared where he was least expected. Vehicles were inspected, dress codes corrected, and conduct redefined on the spot.

This is leadership without a script. When a Commissioner steps out to adjust a subordinate’s cap badge, the entire force adjusts its attitude. Improper dressing is fading. Ill-mannered behavior is disappearing. Officers now move with the awareness that excellence is being watched. Institutions are rebuilt not by threats alone, but by presence.

Beyond reforming men, CP Adepoju has redefined how Rivers fights crime. The strategy shifted from intimidation to intelligence. Tactical teams and anti-kidnapping units now hunt with data and precision. Kidnapping rings that once terrorized communities have been dismantled. Cult clashes are being crushed. Distress calls meet faster, sharper responses.

The removal of static checkpoints did not create a vacuum. It created smarter security. Roads are freer, yet safer. Criminals who celebrated the disappearance of roadblocks now face mobile patrols they cannot predict or escape. The police are moving, thinking, and striking where criminals feel safest. That shift has restored confidence to motorists and families who travel without fear.

The most thrilling chapter is the return of public trust. Rivers people are talking to the police again. They share information. They call the control room. They engage because they believe their voice matters. That trust was earned through accountability. When citizens see fairness replace favouritism at the station, trust grows roots. Rivers now has a command that answers to the people as much as it answers to the hierarchy.

This victory rides on the vision of the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu PSC, who placed the right leader at the right time. Gratitude also goes to every DPO, Area Commander, and rank-and-file Officer standing guard in the rain and choosing service over comfort. Their sacrifice is the backbone of this transformation.

Through the Commissioner’s office, an appeal rises to Mr. President, His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR. To whom much is given, much is expected. Our officers give their lives daily. Let logistics match that courage: better housing, police children primary and secondary school in every Area Command, modern patrol vehicles, functional communication tools, prompt allowances, and welfare that guarantees dignity after service. An officer whose family is secure will protect your family with his life.

CP Olugbenga Adepoju Adewale and his amiable team, Rivers State salutes you. Your work is captivating, your reforms are thrilling, your impact is written on every safer street. May your tenure be marked by more victories and a legacy that outlives every medal.

Rivers is watching. Nigeria is watching. The story under your command is one every Officer will be proud to tell.
