Chairman of Kolokuma/Opokuma Local Government Area, Chief Denginye Ubarugu, says the award as the ‘Best Performing Local Government Area chairman in Bayelsa State’ will to spur him to double his efforts at contributing to the improvement of the society.

Ubarugu, who spoke to journalists after receiving the award, by the Bayelsa State Media Network, said he did not solicit for the award, adding that for the media, which is the fourth estate of the realm and also holds public officers accountable, to have deemed it fit to recognise his efforts, was a thing he would continue to treasure and would also endear him to do his best in any public office he would occupy.

“I am really surprised at where this award has come from, considering the fact that the media always beam their searchlight on public office holders by holding them accountable through their investigative journalism; and out of the eight local government areas of the state, I am considered.”

Earlier, organizer of the Bayelsa Media Network Award, Blessing Ozegbe, publisher of the Cannon Newspaper, said the award which started three years ago was aimed at encouraging public office holders to do their best while in office. He noted that the award was not monetarily induced, but geared towards the enthronement of excellent performance among public office holders at the third tier of government.

He said “We didn’t just give people this award, but our team usually subjected awardees to series of verifiable tests and those with credible performance index are given the award and those who fall short has to sit up, and year in year out, this award has continued to improve in quality.”

According to him, the award was also in recognition of the chairman’s unrelenting efforts at providing the dividends of democracy to those at the grassroots with people-oriented projects in healthcare, education and basic infrastructures.
