NUJ Protests Appointment of ‘Non-Journalist’ as AKHA’s Press Secretary

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in Akwa Ibom State has taken a decisive step by withdrawing journalists from covering the activities of the state House ot Assembly, AKHA.

The decision, according to a report by WatchmanPost’s Joseph Atainyang, is in response to the appointment of Mr Nkereuwem Udom, described by the union as “a non-journalist with no relevant academic background in journalism,” as the press secretary and head of Press Corps at the Assembly.

The NUJ reportedly took the decision during its state congress on Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at the Press Centre in Uyo, while vehemently disapproving of such appointment’

According to the report, the union has also issued a strong warning that any member who fails to comply with the withdrawal directive would face severe disciplinary measures.

The NUJ believes that the appointment poses a significant threat to the integrity of journalism and the indispensable role it plays in society. They argue that such a decision to appoint Mr Udom to the job undermines the professionalism and expertise required for effectively discharging media duties.

In a communique signed by the state chairman, Comrade Amos Etuk, and secretary, Comrade Dominic Akpan, the NUJ emphasized its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the interests ot its members and upholding the credibility ot Journalism in Akwa Ibom State.

Others who endorsed the document were the chairman of the Communique Drafting Committee, Comrade Inioöong Ekponta, Comrade Dianime Liko (secretary) and Comrade Emem Okon.

Analysts believe that the withdrawal of journalists trom covering the AKHA would have a profound impact on news coverage of the state legislature.

Stephen Abia, a lawyer, said the action serves as a powerful statement and emphasizes the NUJ’s dedication to upholding the principles of journalism and ensuring transparency and accountability in governance.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the AKHA and other stakeholders will respond to the NUJ’s action.

The withdrawal ot journalists raises serious concerns about access to information and the potential consequences for the relationship between the legislature and the media in Akwa Ibom State.
