By Godwin Chukwumaechi, Port Harcourt

The governorship candidate of the Action Alliance (AA) in Rivers State, Dr. Dawari George, has declared that the people represent the “end and means of development,” adding that they should be allowed to proffer solutions to their development needs.

Dr. George made the declaration Tuesday in Port Harcourt at the unveiling of his running mate, Barr. Tonnie Anoruewhom, and the opening of the party’s campaign for the coming elections.

Speaking to journalists on the sidelines, Dr. George said; “The people represent the ends and means of development. People are not the means to development; people are the end of development”.

He explained that the party would run an unconventional type of campaign, “the type never ran in the state before,” adding that the campaign would involve engaging the people and getting inputs from them on their vision for the state.

“It (the campaign) is a completely new style. That means it does not mean talking to the people on the platform and walking away but we are going to engage people and to allow them to interrogate and scrutinise what we put before them and also share with us what they want. With that we will continue to develop a document until we get something that is near what is the people’s vision for Rivers State”.

The Action Alliance governorship candidate said his team would form a formidable team that will work with the citizens and residents of the state to deliver the people’s vision.

He said he has offered himself as the bridge that will connect the people to their desired future of peace and security, adding that “Today marks the beginning of selection process to form a formidable team that will work with the citizens and residents of Rivers State to deliver the people’s vision.

“I have offered myself as the bridge that will connect the people to their desired future of peace and security, industrialization, skills and job creation, and good governance. But I am conscious that a bridge cannot stand without supporting pillars. It is for this reason that I commit to assembling the best possible team that understands the plight of the people and is passionate at ensuring that the masses live well.

“It is with this consciousness that I instituted a very thorough process of clarifying the job description of the office of the deputy governor as enshrined in the 1999 Constitution as amended, and identifying the candidate that possesses the job specification for this important job. In choosing the right candidate therefore, consideration was given to the 3PCs, which are personal characteristics, professional competence and political consideration.

On ‘Personal Characteristics,’ he said: “The promise of ‘Morning Again’ in Rivers State demands that the drivers of this promise must be men and women of demonstrable character, high social intelligence and deep commitment to the well-being of the masses.”

He added that governance runs on sound ideas and the technical competence to deliver on promises, noting that in considering ‘Political Consideration’: “The right choice for the office is one without a political baggage, as political choices are made with the intent of gaining political mileage towards winning elections, yet leaving room for inclusiveness”.

He added that his running mate is a man of impeccable integrity who has committed to use his rich endowments to partner with him to work with Rivers People to deliver on their vision.

In his respond, the deputy governorship candidate of AA, Tonnie Anoruewhom, assured that he will work with the governorship candidate to ensure that insecurity is tackled across the state.
