There are moments when courage must stop whispering and begin to speak. The bold decision of Hon. Gloria Boma Harry to step forward and seek the mandate of the good people of Degema/Bonny Federal Constituency is one of such moments.
Here is a woman who has spent years telling the stories of society through the pages of newspapers as a journalist and story writer. Today, she is daring to move from writing the story to becoming part of the story.
What a beautiful paradox: the woman who once reported the struggles of the people is now stepping forward to confront those struggles from the legislative chamber.
Her journey through the platform of the PDP is more than another political ambition. It is a reminder that women must not remain spectators in the theatre of governance. They must come to the table where decisions are made.
Degema and Bonny are blessed with water, history, culture and enormous natural wealth. Yet, like much of the Niger Delta, we continue to witness the painful paradox of wealth beneath our feet and hardship in the homes of our people.
We need representation that listens. Representation that understands. Representation that can speak boldly for the people.
A journalist knows how to listen. She knows how to ask questions, investigate issues and bring hidden stories to public attention. Now, Gloria Boma Harry seeks to take that pen from the pages of the newspaper into the chambers of the National Assembly.
Let a woman go.
Let her contest.
Let her speak.
Let her bring her experience to the table.
Let her vision be tested by the people.
Not because she is a woman alone, but because she deserves the opportunity to prove her capacity to serve.
The creek should not be a limitation. The mangroves should not symbolise neglect. The waters of Degema and Bonny should carry the dreams of our people beyond the creeks and into the centre of national decision-making.
