The executive director of Stakeholders Alliance for Corporate Accountability (SACA) Kingsley Ozegbe, has disclosed that a review of the National oil spill monitor website has revealed that third party interference, vandalism and willful damage has accounted for 76.24% of 1,107 oil spill incidences between January 2018 and July 2020.

He made the disclosure during a courtesy call on the commandant of the Nigeria Security and Cilvil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Mrs Lucy Fakoya, and the management staff.

Ozegbe said, further analysis unveiled that about 48% of the spillages occured in Rivers State, 21% in Delta State, 15% in Bayelsa State and 16% in 6 other states that produce oil.

Earlier, the state commandant of the Nigeria Security and Cilvil Defence Corps, Mrs Lucy Fakoya promised to collaborate with SACA and other stakeholders in the fight against oil spill on the environment.

“Collaboration is key in the fight against oil spill in the Niger Delta region. We all need ourselves, as no institution works independent of others without collaboration. We all need each other,” she said.

Stressing on collaboration, Fakoya said that the NSCDC is not in competition in the fight against what should be a common enemy, hence the organization doesn’t as part of its mandate neglect any call and always swings into action where they are needed to protect Federal Government critical infrastructure.

“We are sometime civil, but go combat against any group that sees our job as a threat,” she said, while giving assurance of further cooperation whenever their services were needed.
