The Rotary Club of Yenagoa Sunshine has distributed packs of food to members of the public and presented a food basket to veteran Rotarian, Past Assistant Governor Sheriff Hussein, as part of activities marking the 2026 World Food Day.

The exercise, held under the theme “Innovate Today, Nourish Tomorrow,” was aimed at raising awareness about hunger, food waste, safe food storage and the need to ensure access to safe and nutritious food for all.

The President of the club, Rotarian Onyaye Edgar Kunle-Olowu, PHF, was represented by the Vice President, Rotarian Ebidese Catherine Bariweni, who led other members to the popular Etegwe Roundabout in Yenagoa, where they distributed packaged food and drinks to members of the public.

The team, which included the Club Administrator, Funmi Benson; Incoming President, Ebi Wilson; and Chair of Public Image, Dr Inebaraton Preye, among other members, engaged passers-by and commuters on the importance of reducing food waste and adopting proper food storage practices.

Speaking on behalf of the club president, Bariweni said food remained a fundamental human right and should not be treated as a privilege.

She called on individuals and communities to support efforts to combat hunger, minimise food waste and promote access to safe and nutritious meals, in line with Rotary International’s humanitarian commitment.

In a related development, the club presented a basket of fruits to Past Assistant Governor Sheriff Hussein at his office at the Bayelsa State Information House in Yenagoa, in recognition of his longstanding service to Rotary.
Receiving the surprise gift, Hussein expressed delight at the gesture, describing it as a thoughtful initiative that demonstrated the club’s commitment to recognising and appreciating its veterans.
“In my over 40 years in Rotary, from Interact to Rotaract and Rotary, I have never seen anything close to this. This is mind-blowing,” he said.

He congratulated the Rotary Club of Yenagoa Sunshine for thinking outside the box and remembering veteran members whose contributions have helped sustain the organisation over the years.

The World Food Day activities reaffirmed the club’s commitment to humanitarian service, food security and the global campaign to achieve Zero Hunger.

Through its public outreach and recognition of veteran Rotarians, the club demonstrated that service goes beyond providing immediate assistance to those in need; it also involves promoting sustainable practices, strengthening community bonds and appreciating those who have dedicated themselves to service.

The Rotary Club of Yenagoa Sunshine reiterated the importance of collective action in building a society where everyone has access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food.
