Meat Processing: Butchers Discard Tyre, Device New Technology

In a deliberate effort to reduce the health hazard associated with the use of tyre and other plastic materials in the processing of meat, the National Butchers Union, Rivers State Chapter has devised a technological device that will be used to roast meat in all the slaughter houses in the state.

Chairman of the butchers’ union, Alhaji Musa Baba Ahmed, made this known while speaking with newsmen after receiving the special advisers to the Rivers State governor on pollution control and sanitation matters, Hon. Nwuke Anucha and Barr. George Ariolu, respectively, at the slaughter house in Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt

Baba Ahmed said that the procurement of the device was in response to the directive of the Rivers State government that the use of tyre in roasting of meat should be discontinued because of the health implication to the people, adding that his union will make it mandatory for all slaughter houses in the state to embrace the new device, while calling on the government to assist in enacting a law that will make it an offence for anybody to continue with the use of tyre in the processing of meat.

Alhaji Ahmed however called on the government to assist in making the device available to all the slaughter houses in the state while also pleading with the government to assist them in the rehabilitation of slabs which he said are in deteriorating conditions.

He described the springing up of illegal and unapproved slaughter houses in the state as worrisome and inimical to the well-being and health of the people, since the meat being killed there are not inspected and certified by the veterinary officials, and further called on government to assist in putting machineries in motion to checkmate such in the interest of the people.

Also specking the special adviser to the governor on pollution control, Hon. Nwuke Anucha, commended the Rivers State House of Assembly for coming up with the policy for butchers to discontinue with the use of tyre for roasting of meat in the state and said they were at the trans-Amadi slaughter to monitor the compliance of that directive and expressed satisfaction with what has been put in place by Butchers Union.

He further announced that the government was building a modern abattoir and called on private investors to partner with the government in this direction.
