Hon. Marcus Uba, an All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain from Evwreni town and Hon. Desmond Okpako, a former councillor in Evwreni Ward were recently attacked by “a group of bandits parading as members of the Delta State Task Force.”

Our correspondent reports that the attack took place along the federal East-West road by Girls Model Secondary School, Evwreni town.

The attack, we also gathered, occurred in the evening hours of Sunday 26 June, 2023 while the victims were on their way from a social function.

Narrating his ordeal to our correspondent, Hon. Uba who expressed gratitude over their safety said, “We went to a social function at neighbouring community. As we were returning in the evening hours of the day, we ran into these notorious criminals and killers from Evwreni town terrorizing people in the name of Delta State Task Force by the Girls Model Secondary School along the East-West federal road.”

He alleged that the gang was led by an individual, “popularly called Blacky,” adding that “they are the people that were already declared wanted by the Nigerian Police for assassination and unwarranted killings in the land of Evwreni.

“They blocked our vehicle and asked us to come out. Immediately we came out, they started attacking us. They destroyed all our phones and part of the vehicle too. We also sustained injuries during the attack. It was just the grace of God that we escaped with the vehicle.”

Hon. Uba further said, “We moved straight to Ughelli Police Station and reported the attack to the area commander. As we speak, that gang leader, Mr. Kelly Oyibocha, has been arrested and now in police custody. The police are still on the search for the other members of the gang.

“At the moment, we heard that there have been sporadic shootings at Evwreni town since his arrest, sponsored by some evil leaders in the community because another of their boys was arrested. This has again made many people to flee the town especially members of the Uba and Adjogbe families. We want to again call on the Delta State government to call on these set of evil leaders to order and to immediately restore peace and normalcy in Evwreni town,” he said.

Efforts to speak with the area commander of the Ughelli Police Station on the attack and arrest of the alleged leader of the gang proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.
