Abrucha Buries Mother In-Law, Pays Traditional Condolence Visit

Dr. Johnson Ovio Abrucha, a renowned traditional medicine practitioner and the ‘Akpohor’ (Deputy speaker) of Unenurhie community, was accompanied by family members, friends, community leaders and loved ones recently as he paid his last respect to his late mother in-law, Mama Blacky Edevwie Johnholt, who passed away at the ripe age of 93 years.

The funeral ceremony, which was celebrated in style and described by many as befitting and historic, was held on Saturday February 22, 2022 at Unenurhie community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.

Paying tribute to his late mother in-law during the interment, Dr. Abrucha described her as a mother who cared for the well-being and welfare of her children and other people without discrimination.

Hear him: “Though my late mother in-law was old before she passed away, but I can’t easily forget her contributions and support to my immediate family. She was more than a mother to me in almost every area of my life. She was a mother I saw that really cared for the well-being and welfare of her children while alive. In fact, how many of her good stories can I share here? They are uncountable. This is my last respect and honour to her as a dearly beloved mother in-law.”

However, according to the traditional funeral rites of Unenurhie people, Dr. Johnson Abrucha further invited family members, friends, community leaders and loved ones as he paid the traditional in-law’s condolence visit to his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Abrucha, and the families of his late mother in-law.  

The condolence visit which was embarked on, on Monday February 28, 2022, brought together crowds of people from far and near and also showcased the true culture of the Unenurhie people as regards funeral and social activities. It was a moment to behold as Dr. Abrucha and his guests made cash gifts to his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Abrucha and members of his late mother in-law’s family. 

In words of appreciation at the end of the in-law’s greetings, the ‘Akpohor’ of Unenurhie community said, “I’m overwhelmed with joy seeing this crowd of people around me. Truly, our people are very supportive and friendly in cases like this. They won’t run away from you when you need them in situations like this. They can only run away from you if you are a notable miscreant or trouble maker in the community.

“I don’t really have much to say here than to thank all of them for their great support to me and my wife in giving a befitting burial to my late mother in-law. The guests are just too many to mention their names one after the other. May God continue to bless of them that are here in Jesus name. I just want to plead with my people to continue with this spirit of brotherhood and friendliness in our community.”

The traditional in-law’s condolence visit ended with the cross presentation of cash gifts, drinks and other notable items between the son in-law and the families of the late mother.

Late Mrs. Blacky Edevwie Johnholt is survived by children, grand children, great grand children, great great grand children and other family members.
