A cleaner Earth is a safer Earth for everyone. This was the message the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco took to the pupils and teachers of Orogbum Primary Schools 1 and 2, in Port Harcourt City, on Wednesday April 26, 2023.
In an environmental sanitation and awareness campaign, supported by Kebetkache Women Development and Resources Centre, Kallop Humanitarian and Environmental Centre and Rotaract Club of Port Harcourt Eco, the Rotary club said the aim was not only to keep the environment clean, but to instill in the younger generation the concept of a cleaner and healthier Earth.
The club’s secretary, Rtn Anthony Aalo, who is also lead of the Environmental Sanitation committee, said man’s activities, with regards to oil exploration and domestic pollution, have placed the Earth in peril and threatens its very existence, while bringing about global warming, release of toxic gases into the atmosphere and extreme weather incidents.
“As members of Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco, whose key focus is the environment, we are committed to sensitizing communities on the best ways to keep the environment clean,” he said.
Aalo urged those present, which included pupils and teachers of the two schools and representatives of Rotary and Kebetkache, to “take action, and try to do something to restore our environment.”
Speaking on the topic ‘Reduce, Reuse and Recycle Waste,’ Rtn Dr. Vivian Ozoekwe pointed out that one’s waste, “can actually be another’s resource.”
She said that most times, “people talk about how we can dispose of our waste, but the main problem is how can we stop the generation of waste. If we have an idea how we can stop the generation of waste, then it will make the disposal of the waste easier.”
The nature and impact of pollution on the environment formed the core of Rtn Alex’s speech to the pupils and teachers of Orogbum State School 1 and 2.
His speech preceded the setting up of an Intaract Club at the two schools by members of Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco, as well as the donation of waste receptacles to the schools.
Earlier, the club had embarked on a sanitation exercise at the schools, starting at about 9:30 am with the cutting of grass and trimming of flowers both in and out of the school premises.
Heads of the school, Mrs Theresa Nsiegbe (School 1) and Mrs Onoma Ibiemi Jeremiah (School 2) were full of praises for Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco.
They expressed appreciation to the Rotary club for the selfless service, adding that the exercise had added a new lease of life to their environment.
