Bayelsa Assembly mulls Naming Media Complex after Diri

By Amos Odhe, Yenagoa

The chairman Bayelsa State House of Assembly committee on Works and Infrastructure, Colonel Barnard Kenebai (rtd), has advocated for the christening of the state’s ultra modern Media complex at Ekeki after the state governor, Senator Douye Diri.

Kenebai made this suggestion during an oversight visit to the complex with members of his committee affirming that only a man with an uncanny passion for the infrastructural development of his state could embark upon a project of that magnitude and quality, especially in a sector often neglected by previous governments.

The House committee chairman opined that the giant strides taken by the Governor Diri-led ‘Prosperity’ administration to address the obvious infrastructural deficit in the state needs support and encouragement from all well meaning Bayelans, adding that the committee is gratified that monies duly appropriated by the House are being so judiciously utilitised.

It was against this backdrop that, Hon Kenebai condemned, in very strong terms, the recent comments credited to the new chairman of the All Progressive Congress in the state, Chief Dennis Otiotio, to the effect that the Diri administration has not achieved anything, and that even the Ogbia Nembe road was an entirely NDDC project with no impact from the state government.

The APC chairman was also reported to have said that the Bayelsa State International Cargo Airport was the most expensive in the country, having cost the state government a whopping #150 billion.

Hon Kenebai said nothing could be farther from the truth as the state government built the airport at the cost of about #75 billion, and has equally expended about #3 billion on the Ogbia Nembe road project.

He said it was the APC’s “propensity for using conspiracy theories and blatant lies just to acquire power that has brought Nigeria to her knees, politically and economically at the centre,” adding that “as a people, we must not allow a party with such manipulative tendencies to access power in our state.”

The House committee chairman on Works and Infrastructure admonished the APC to rise up to the challenge of a responsible opposition party in the state by offering constructive criticism based on concrete and verifiable facts.
