The principal of Unenurhie Secondary School, Unenurhie in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, Dr. T. A. Oremegue, has appealed to the state government to ensure the fencing of the school to prevent insecurity and encroachment into the school premises by invaders and some indigenes of the host community.
Speaking to our correspondent recently in his office, the principal said, “Fencing of the school compound is very paramount to the security of our students and staff. This is important especially now that kidnapping and other terrorist attacks are the vogue. It will also help to secure the school land.
“Since I resumed here as principal, I continue to receive series of reports and threats from some of the indigenes of the host community trying to encroach on the school land, but I have to use wisdom to resolve all these issues. This is why I’m appealing to the Delta State government to make it expedient to fence the school to protect the students and to also secure and protect the school land,” he said.
Speaking in the same vein, chairman of the Parents Teachers Association (PTA) of the school, who is also secretary of the host community, Mr. Lucky Chadiri, and the host community’s president-general, Mr. Peter Maison, said, “We have written several letters to the Delta State government through the DESOPADEC to fence both the primary and secondary schools in this community, but till now, we haven’t got answers to our requests.
“Apart from these our schools, we believe that every other school in communities around us are properly fenced. In the same way, we as community leaders and also parents to children in these schools are passionately appealing to our listening and working governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, to fence the two public schools in order to protect our children and to also secure the school lands from encroachment,” the duo said.
