We Demand End to Oil Spill, Gas Flares ~ Bassey

The Director, Health of Mother Earth  Foundation (HOMEF), Nnimmo Bassey said the Organisation will join other groups to demand an end to Oil Spill, Gas Flares and dumping of toxic waters in our various communities within the Niger Delta.

Mr. Bassey dropped the hint at a one day program organised by Ketbekache Women Development and Resources Centre in Bori, Khana Local Government Headquarters to mark the Niger Delta Women Day of Action for Environment Justice. The programme which is also part of 16 days activism against violence against women was used to drum support for the Ogoni Cleanup.

He charged the women to continue the struggle to overturn the forces of oppression, exploitation and wickedness while promising to support the women in all ramification, noting that Emen Okon, the executive director of Kebetchache Women Development and Resources Centre has done well to organise the program.

Earlier, the executive director of Kebetkache Women Development and Resources Centre, Emen Okon told the gathering that it was imperative to gather the women across the Niger Delta to mark the Niger Delta Women Day of Action for Environmental justice in Bori, Khana Local Government Area to draw the attention of the Federal Government to the continued delay of the Ogoni Cleanup and most importantly the delay in the implementation of the emergency measures which include portable drinking water which has aggravated the suffering of the women.

She expresses concern that due to lack of portable drinking water, Ogoni women have numerous health implication and challenges that are very peculiar to the women folk. Okon further task the women not to relent in the quest to demand their due right from the Government at all level noting that due to the environmental injustice women are at greater risk and disadvantage position in their various communities, while urging the Federal Government to step up action to end the discrimination against women.

She  used the event to discuss various topics such as, Women and Climate change, Women and the Cleanup process in Ogoni, Oil, pollution and women in the Niger Delta, Niger Delta women and writings on the environment, women and Energy, Women Building Power and role of women in promoting peace and security in the Niger Delta.

In his speech the President of the Movement of the Survival of Ogoni People, Mr. Legbuisi Saro Pyagbara task the women to be more united especially now so that the Federal Government will have not excuse not to do the Cleanup and they should continue to preach peace to the children so that peace will reign during and after the process. Other activist who gave goodwill message include Comrade Celestine Akpobari, Young Kigbara, Princess Victoria, Loretta Ahuokpeme, Dr. Ben Ubleble, Dr. Patience Osarojiji and FOWA President among others.

Women who graced the occasion were drawn from Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Edo, Cross River State among others.
