The Hon. Chima Njoku Support Group has condemned the alleged machete attack on one of its members, Mr. Ugochukwu Eke, describing it as a direct assault on peace and political tolerance in Etche Local Government Area.
The group’s leadership, led by Director-General Hon. Chukwuemeka Samuel Njoku (Mayor) and all 19 Ward Coordinators, visited Mr. Eke in hospital today to ascertain his condition and assure him of the group’s solidarity.
According to the group, Mr. Eke was allegedly attacked and cut with a machete by one Mr. Divine Nnochiri Obiajunwa.
Speaking after the visit, Hon. Njoku described the incident as “unfortunate and unacceptable,” stressing that no political disagreement should degenerate into bloodshed.
“Etche is a land of peace, brotherhood and communal values,” the DG said. “We strongly condemn every act of violence, intimidation and political provocation. We are calling on security agencies to conduct a thorough, impartial and professional investigation, and ensure that justice takes its course.”
The group made it clear that it is not seeking revenge.
“We will not take the law into our hands. But we will not abandon our own. Our response will be firm, organised, lawful and resolute,” Hon. Njoku stated.
The support group also restated the position of its Principal, the Executive Chairman of Etche LGA, Hon. Chima Njoku, who it said “came prepared to work.”
“It is unfortunate that at a time the administration is delivering visible projects across Etche, enemies of progress are trying to create unnecessary distractions,” the communiqué read.
“We say NO to every attempt to derail, destabilise or distract the Hon. Chima Njoku administration through violence or intimidation.”
The group called on stakeholders to help de-escalate tension: Security agencies should investigate the attack on Mr. Eke and prosecute anyone found culpable. Political leaders should caution supporters against violence and provocation. Traditional rulers should use their influence to promote peace and reconciliation. All political actors should remember that politics must not become war against our own people. Members of the group should remain calm, disciplined and law-abiding and must not retaliate.
In its resolution, the group vowed: “We will not be intimidated. We will not be divided. We will not be distracted. And we will not abandon our members.”
The group wished Mr. Eke a speedy recovery and urged his family to remain calm as authorities handle the matter.
