Ulakwo-Umuselem, Etche — The Paramount Ruler of Ulakwo-Umuselem, His Royal Highness Eze Dr. Ken Nwala, KSC, JP, Onye Ishi Agwuru III of Etcheland, has once again showcased the rich cultural tapestry of the Etche people at the 2nd Edition of the Etche Festival of Food Art and Cultural Exhibition held at his palace today.
The event, which brought together prominent dignitaries, cultural enthusiasts, and residents, featured a vibrant mix of traditional wrestling, dance competitions, student outreach programs, and a food art exhibition that highlighted the culinary delights of Etche.
Among the distinguished guests in attendance were Hon. Mrs. Faith Ijeoma Obene, Vice Chairman of Etche Local Government Area; Hon. Barr. Reginald Ukwuoma, former Chairman of Etche LGA; Eze Ishmael O. Nweke, the Ochimba of Chokota Town; Hon. Livinus Amadi; and Hon. Dr. Alfred Nwafor, PDP Deputy Youth Leader, Rivers State.
Highlights of the festival included thrilling traditional wrestling bouts, with participants showcasing strength and skill in the popular “Ogbuebulu” contest. Cultural dance groups from Etche and Ijaw communities wived and stomped their way into the hearts of attendees, blending tradition with contemporary flair. Students from local schools participated in outreach activities, reinforcing the festival’s focus on youth engagement and cultural preservation.
The dance competition winners were awarded cash prizes: ₦150,000 for first place, ₦100,000 for second place, and ₦50,000 for third place, in recognition of their talent and efforts to keep Etche traditions alive.
Hon. Mrs. Faith Ijeoma Obene commended Eze Nwala for his tireless efforts in promoting Etche heritage. “Eze Nwala’s dedication plays a vital role in fostering cultural identity, engaging youth, and building communal harmony,” she said.
Eze Nwala’s initiative has solidified Ulakwo-Umuselem’s reputation as a cultural hub in Etcheland, successfully merging tradition with modern expression. The festival served as a powerful reminder of the role culture plays in uniting people and inspiring younger generations.
The event concluded with a community feast and cultural performances into the night, leaving attendees with a renewed sense of pride in Etche’s heritage.
