In a collective effort to restore the dignity and long-standing legacy of the 94-year-old Urhobo Progress Union (UPU), leading aspirants for the Union’s national offices have paid a consultation visit to the Ukoko R’ Ivie Urhobo, the Council of Urhobo Traditional Rulers at the Palace of the Ovie of Ughelli Kingdom. Their mission was to seek royal blessings, counsel, and support ahead of the forthcoming UPU elections.
The delegation comprised distinguished sons and daughters of Urhoboland offering themselves for service: Chief Simeon Ohwofa for President General; Omiragua Abraham Ogbodo for 2nd Deputy President General; Chief Dr. Patrick Origbo for National Secretary; Dr. Benson Uwheru for Assistant National Secretary; and Prof. Roseline Aziza for National Financial Secretary. Others included Prof. Dicta Ogisi for National Treasurer; Barr. Brown Umukoro for National Legal Adviser; Prof. Sunny Awhefeada for National Publicity Secretary; Chief Dame Veronica Ovieneajebon for Assistant National Publicity Secretary; and Mr. Mathew Ogagavworia for National Auditor.
During the visit, the team, operating under the banner, ‘Make Urhobo Great Again’ (MUGA) presented an eight-point manifesto outlining their vision for a revitalised UPU. The key focus areas include: Unity, peace and reconcilliation; institutional reform and good governance; ICT, youth and women empowerment; enconomic renaissance and investment drive; education, health and Urhobo language development; Security and Community development; Diaspora collaboration; and agriculture and rural transformation.
In response, the assembled monarchs commended the aspirants for their humility and willingness to subject themselves to traditional scrutiny. They emphasised the need for unity, transparency, and responsible leadership in the affairs of the UPU. The kings then offered solemn prayers for guidance, wisdom, and success, invoking divine favour upon the team and wishing them the strength to pursue a vision that would uplift the entire Urhobo nation.
