Makarfi’s Victory’ll Ensure Vibrant Opposition ~ Omehia

Former governor of Rivers State, Sir Celestine Omehia says the Supreme Court judgement that confirmed Senator Ahmed Makarfi as the interim national chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is not just a victory for the party and Nigerians, but would bring about vibrant opposition in the Nigerian politics.

Sir Omehia, who spoke recently to newsmen at the Port Harcourt International Airport Omagwa, noted that if the judgement had gone otherwise, the party (PDP) would have been completely scattered and “we would have had a one-party state in Nigeria.”

He observed that whether All Progressives Congress members (APC) were united or not, the fact would have been that the disorganization in the PDP would have given them (APC) the opportunity to grow stronger and better.

“But the fact now that the Supreme Court has given a verdict that has united the PDP, means that there is going to be a continuous vibrant opposition in Nigerian politics,” he said, and thanked all the members of the PDP for being dogged, resilient and determined to unite themselves in spite of their differences.

The unity, he said, is now very imperative in the sense that Nigerians, through their actions and reactions, needed the PDP after tasting both the PDP and APC governance and know the difference.

Sir Omehia also commended the judiciary for doing justice on the matter and praised the leadership of the present Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter S.N. Onnoghen who he said has taken different stand on different political matters in the country.

Also speaking, the Speaker of Rivers State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Ikuinyi Awaji Ibani said the Supreme Court judgement was landmark enough to prove to the whole world that justice has a long arm and memory which whoever approaches it must be patient.

He added that the judgement had shown that anybody could secure judgement especially in a polity where people believe there should equity and transparency, stressing that the victory of the leadership of Makarfi shows that “at all times, for those who claim to be democrats, you must continue to wait and seek justice in a legitimate manner and way that is befitting of democratic values.”
