Port Security: Onne Manager Hands Over Speed Boat To Marine Police

The port manager of Onne Port, Alhassan Ismaila Abubakar, has commissioned a 75-horse power high-speed marine boat, and handed same over to the Marine Police at the port.

Performing the commissioning of the boat procured by Onne Port, the port manager, Alhassan Abubakar, said that the speed boat was purchased to serve the Marine Police within the operational area of Onne Port. “The reason for acquiring this boat is to provide security and to aid your men in marine police to provide regular surveillance of all the waterways within the jurisdiction of Onne Port,” he said.
Abubakar expressed gratitude that the boat came at a time it was most needed for the Marine police to be on top of their work in providing security. He observed that the boat is state of the art water – craft, strong and well built.
The port manager said that security of lives, property and the facilities within Onne Port is of utmost priority to his leadership, and expressed joy that since he assumed office as the port manager last year, there has been tremendous improvement in the security status of the port.
He said that as at the time he arrived, the Port facility was operating on ISPS Code level 2, but expressed joy that the situation has now changed. “As we speak the ISPS Code level of internationally recognized security status of Onne Port has moved to level 1, meaning that insecurity in and around Onne Port has changed”, he added.
The Onne port manager noted that the current security status level of Onne Port has been Okayed by NIMASA. He said it was a welcome development that NIMASA now lowered security level at Onne Port from 2 to one.
“We are now like any other port in Nigeria that enjoys high level of relative peace within Onne Port operational zone”, Abubakar added. He further noted that Onne water is safe, and urged port users, importers to feel free to come to Onne Port for their business.
Receiving the boat on behalf of DPO Onne Port Police, Mr Solomon Sampson, the officer in charge (OC) Marine Onne Port, expressed appreciation to the port manager for his pro – activeness to fight crime in the water channels.
“I am so happy and impressed; we have been on this request since for surveillance security boat. Today it is done. We thank God and we thank the Port Manager for his proactive action to address security challenges of Onne Port” Mr. Solomon Sampson the OC Marine, Onne Port Police said.
He assured that the surveillance security boat will be utilized optimally and that it will help his men at the command to carry out regular surveillance within the Onne Port and its waterways.
In a separate interview shortly after the boat commissioning, the Onne Port Manager, said under his watch, that Onne Port is also concerned on safety matters in and around the port.
He said since he assumed office, his office had recovered abandoned ‘Fire Truck’ that was bad. He said the rehabilitated Fire Fighting Truck is working and that it is ready to go for fire – fighting operations not only within Onne Port facility, but within their host communities wherever fire outbreak may occur.
He said other relevant fire – fighting equipment is also put in place to ensure performance and promptness by Onne Port fire fighters.
