Federal and State Governments has been urged to increase their budgetary provisions for the education sector in the country.
Professor of Economic Planning and Political History, Department of History and International Diplomacy at the Rivers State University (RSU), Nkpolu Orowurukwo, Rivers State, Prof. Frank Amugo, stated this in a chat with newsmen at the University.
Prof Amugo lamented the dwindling state of the education sector in the country adding that funding for the sector has been a far cry from desired expectations.
The Lecturer who was the former Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences in the university, advocated for more funding for the sector in line with global standards stressing that poor funding for the sector has impeded the growth and development of education at all levels in the country.
“We need more attention from the government at all levels. We are advocating for the government to put in more funding into education, provide greater percentage for education in our budgets”, he said.
The University don who lamented the deteriorating state of infrastructure and poor teachers welfare in the sector, called for more investments to upgrade the infrastructure deficits in order to enhance the learning environment in the Institutions.
Prof. Amugo equally decried the poor remunerations to teachers in the Institutions stating that the dissatisfactory package for teachers in the country was frustrating the progress and development of the sector.
According to the Lecturer, the poor welfare incentives to teachers in the sector was responsible for most lecturers seeking for greener pastures overseas adding that some others engage in other survival measures to argument their incomes.
“Our lecturers are underpaid and this has frustrated progress. A lot of lecturers are doing one thing or the other to survive the harsh economy in the country, Prof. Amugo stated
