Delta Govt Postpones Evwreni Elections ‘Indefinitely’

By Young E. Freeborn, Warri

The Evwreni Clan Improvement Union’s National Executive Committee elections earlier scheduled for Saturday November 18, 2023, has been postponed indefinitely by the secretary to the Delta State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, as a result of “perceived challenges” to the peaceful conduct of the elections.

A statement released by the secretary to the state government on Wednesday and sent to Evwreni people read in parts: “Let me convey again the gratitude of the government of Delta State for your contributions and sacrifices towards the restoration of normalcy to our ancestral land, Evwreni. I wish to reassure you all of government’s commitment to bring peace to the community.

“We had resolved to hold the elections into the National Executive Committee of the Evwreni Clan Improvement Union (ECIU) on Saturday, 18th November, 2023, as a watershed towards this goal. However, government has just been notified that some branches/communities have submitted two different lists of delegates for the elections.

“This is unacceptable as it can cause great damage to the general goodwill we have all worked very hard to establish in last few weeks.”

The statement further said that, “To sustain the progress that we collectively made so far, government has resolved that it is in the best interest of all parties to postpone the elections by a few weeks to enable us resolve these emerging issues.

“Consequently, the elections earlier scheduled for Saturday, 18th November 2023, are hereby postponed. Please notify all parties of this development. An announcement will be made in the coming days on the way forward for the guidance of all as we thank you for your continued cooperation.”
