2023: Nigerians Expect Turn Around In Economy, Security Architecture ~ Offor

An industrialist and managing director/chief executive officer (MD/CEO) of Ramec Group of Companies Ltd. Chief Engr. Sir Grant Offor, has noted that in a run up to the 2023 presidential election, Nigerians expect a president who knows what it takes to turn the ailing economy around and holistically over-haul the country’s security architecture for optimal result.

According to him, since the country started its fourth democratic governance in 1999, the nation’s hitherto relatively sound economy has continuously witnessed steady, but gradual retardation and regression in addition to high level of insecurity, adding that the next president should be a person who knows what it takes to turn the economy around and place it on a positive footing.

Engr. Offor said the unprecedented level of insecurity, with high level of banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery and cybercrime operations ravaging the country on daily basis and holding common citizens hostage with impunity, coupled with the high degree of religious intolerance, in addition to the country’s battered economy, certainly requires an in-coming president who knows the problems of Nigeria up to his fingertips, who also has the energy and strength to go around the country and fix things whenever the need arises and not to depend on the advice of his immediate kitchen cabinet whenever there is crises in the country.

“Honestly, I align myself with the stand of the former governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, who said inter-alia, that in view of the ailing economy of Nigeria with high rate of inflation and continual global de-valuation of her currency and lack of job creation for the graduate youths in our society, Nigeria need a president who knows the economic problems of the country and can quickly proffer economic solutions within the first year in office”.

On the issue of insecurity in the country, the engineer said the in-coming president should consciously apply ‘consequence management’ in the security architecture to achieve optional result.

According to him, consequence management simply means that “various unit commanders should take full responsibility of their operational units to ensure efficiency and positive results and should be held responsible in their units in the event of any noticeable lapses or operational incompetence and failures. In this way, the commander would sit up, and do their work professionally.

“Subsequently, the country’s security architecture would be holistically over-hauled for the betterment of the country and consequently foreign investors would not be scared to come into the country to do business and assist government to create job opportunities for our teaming qualified youths in the country, though there is nowhere in the world that crime and robbery could be totally eliminated; but it could be reduced to its barest minimum.”
On the issue of two sons of Rivers State, Gov. Nyesom Wike and immediate past Transportation minister, Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, both from Ikwerre ethnic extraction, going for 2023 presidential election in the country, Chief Offor noted that it was a great phenomenon for the state and a pride to the Ikwerre ethnic nationality, and wished both of them success in their presidential ambitions on their various political platforms.

To him, Gov. Wike has done excellently well as governor of Rivers State, putting in place physical transformation in terms of infrastructural development within the last seven years and has brought great respect and pride in the state, adding that if he is given the opportunity to serve as president of the country, could similarly replicate such developmental strides in the country.

He further noted that the former Transportation minister, Rt. Hon. Amaechi, has really brought great revolution in modern rail transportation in the country.

“In fact, Amaechi is an icon of rail revolution and a catalyst of modern transportation system in Nigeria; a pride to Buhari’s administration since 2015. Some people tagged him ‘Super Minister of Buhari Government.’

“The two young politicians from Rivers State have done very well in their respective offices, going by their pedigrees and antecedent. Both have the energy and national acceptability to do well as president of the country, if voted for a 2023. They are both eminently qualified and have age advantage on their sides. My humble prayer is that let one of them eventually emerge as the president of this country come 2023,” Chief Offor noted.
