A National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member, serving in Rivers State, has donated a sick bay to the Government Technical College in the state capital, Port Harcourt, for use by both students of the college and members of the host communities.
The Youth Corps member, Mrs Osephni Dibaal Oghu, who is also serving in the school, said she mobilized nearly four million Naira to be able to build and equip the medical facility.
“The amount would have been more than that but for the direct labour provided by the school,” she told newsmen shortly after the commissioning ceremony of the project on Friday.
Mrs Sylverline Ibama, who represented the state’s Education commissioner at the ceremony, commended the donor Youth Corps member before cutting the tape to declare the sick bay open.
Her Health ministry counterpart, Dr Mandah Chijioke, director of Medical Services, who also represented the permanent secretary promised that the ministry will provide the requisite personnel for the immediate operations of the facility.
“Indeed, this sick bay is ours because health belongs to the Ministry of Health. It’ll enable the school get accreditation. The Rivers State Ministry of Health is very ready to partner with NYSC to provide the requisite personnel to kick off operations in this facility immediately and we’ll also provide supporting services when needed,” he stated.
The NYSC state coordinator, who was represented by the assistant director in charge of Community Development Services (CDS), Mr Ezeajughu Ifeanyi Joseph, commended the principal of the college for providing the enabling environment for the Corps member to execute the project.
“I want to sincerely appreciate the principal of this great school, because if the school hadn’t given an enabling environment for this Corps member to excel and to have this kind of project, I don’t think we’ll gather here this morning for this project,” he said as he advised other employers of Youth Corps members to emulate her by providing the enabling environment for corpers to serve our country.
Earlier, principal of the college, Mrs Roseline Adooh said, “the school has severally presented this need to other individuals and corporate bodies and was turned down. Today, I’m glad our Corps member, Oghu Dibaal Osephni gave it to the college as her personal contribution to the Community Development Service.
“We all know that this medical compartment will provide First Aid to the students and staff of this college. In addition to this, it will qualify the college for full accreditation by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE).”
She therefore recommended Oghu to the NYSC management for an award. “I appreciate her for this contribution to the development of the college and will not hesitate to recommend her to the NYSC authority for an award.”
