Mr Peter Maison

We’re Not Part of Internal Crisis in Evwreni ~ Unenurhie PG

By Young E. Freeborn, Warri

The president-general of Unenurhie community, Mr. Peter Maison, has dissociated himself and his community from the recent fracas that rocked Evwreni community.

Our correspondent gathered that a young man was shot dead in the fracas, allegedly by one Mr. Festus Wilfred, while, his (Mr. Festus) mother, Mrs. Ajenakevwe Ogbovwa, was allegedly burn to death in a retaliatory attack by irate youths.

In an interview with our correspondent after the community’s general meeting at the town hall, the president-general said, “We want to boldly announce to all Unenurhie people and to all Evwreni people especially the leadership and also to the government of Delta State and the general public that, Unenurhie as a community has no hand in Mr. Festus Wilfred allegedly killing a person at Evwreni community.

“The alleged killer in question is a wanted person by the government before now. He also allegedly killed one Mr. Charles Obegor about two years ago that led to a very strong internal crisis in this community where people were injured and properties worth millions of naira destroyed. We are just recuperating from the effects of that crisis now.

“After he allegedly killed this man here, he was happily invited by the Ovie of Evwreni kingdom to be one of his personal aides. He then fled with his immediate family, including his mother to Evwreni community for refuge.

“This person was being harboured and protected by the said Ovie of Evwreni kingdom by his power as a traditional ruler. If truly the Ovie considers Unenurhie community as part of the Evwreni kingdom, he wouldn’t have been harbouring a wanted person and a notorious criminal who has been terrorizing us as a community which is part of his kingdom.

“This is why we are crying that we can no longer be part of this Evwreni kingdom. We want the Delta State government to recognize us as a separate and independent kingdom from this Evwreni kingdom since we have all the prerequisites for creating a kingdom.”

The president-general warned all indigenes and residents of Unenurhie community to stop aiding and abetting crimes and suspected criminals.

“We want at this time to warn all our indigenes and residents in this community to distance themselves from the said Mr. Festus Wilfred. If we find out that somebody or group of persons are supporting him here or harbouring or passing information to him in any way or form, such a person or group of persons would be dealt with in a harder way and would be handed over to the Nigerian Police for proper interrogations.

“Mr. Festus Wilfred is a boy to the Ovie of Evwreni kingdom. He allegedly shot the person under his watchful eyes at Evwreni town. He knows how to settle that matter without bringing the name of Unenurhie community into it. We have no problem with Evwreni people. Any of our children who dares attack any Evwreni person over this issue, that person or his parents will be handed over to the Evwreni people or the Nigerian Police without delay. Therefore, we are calling our children stay clear from this Evwreni issue. The battle is between Mr. Festus Wilfred and the family of the deceased. We are not part of it in any way at all. This is our unanimous and solemn declaration as a community over this issue,” he said.
