Questions about hygiene and water sanitation formed the theme of School quiz competition, organised by WaterAid Nigeria among some select Secondary Schools in Plateau State. The aim was to test the intelligence of students aimed at boosting their hygiene and water sanitation practice, therefore in the last financial year where WaterAid executed its projects, select Schools like Government Secondary Schools, such as, Sha, Mushere, Richa, in Bokkos LGA and Dingjor in Langtang North LGA of Plateau, were tipped to compete in an inter-school quiz competition. In partnership with a sister agency, a Non Governmental Organisation, known as Community Based Development (CBD), the inter-school quiz competition turned a huge success as students were exposed to questions on healthy living. Consequently, female students of participating schools, were also tasked on menstral hygiene management aimed at halting absenteeism from school and work after leaving school. Speaking earlier, the programme officer, Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), Mr. Mashat Mallo, stated that hygiene training and sanitation education programme, which were carried out in the participating schools, were aimed at promoting and sustaining quality hygiene practice among students in rural communities. Mallo noted that the competition will be sustained annually by the Water and Sanitation Units of the various LGAs, with take-away prizes and plaques. He assured that the questions for the annual subsequent quiz will only cover areas where the Environment Health Clubs were trained, such as Water, Sanitation, Hygiene and Menstrual Hygiene Management.
