Agadama community in Uwheru kingdom, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State was recently thrown into mourning and pandemonium as two aged women were killed as a result of marital issues between their children.
Narrating the incidence to our correspondent, a respected leader in the community, who spoke on the condition of anonymity said, “What happened was that, there was a misunderstanding between a couple. The wife decided to pack to her mother’s place. Until this ugly incidence happened, the issue between the husband and wife was not settled.
“Meanwhile, you know we are all farmers here. Farming is our main occupation in the community. The estranged wife and her mother came to the husband’s compound when he wasn’t around to cut sweet potato roots planted in his nursery bed without informing him. Whether they want to plant them or sell them to other farmers, nobody knows.”
Continuing, the community leader said, “This now triggered the annoyance of the husband as he wasn’t informed before they came to cut his sweet potato roots. He went to meet them in their own compound and suggested to them that, to avoid unnecessary arguments, the four bags they had filled, should be shared into two bags; two for him and two for them.
“But the estranged wife’s mother blatantly refused, saying they had been the ones taking care of the children from the marriage since the misunderstanding started long ago. She refused to share them as demanded by the man.
“To cut a long story short, the woman’s mother now slapped the man as the argument continued. The man was annoyed and picked a cutlass and before people knew, he had already cut down the mother-in-law’s right hand. The woman fell down and died as a result of excessive bleeding.
“Immediately the estranged woman’s children and her family members got the news of what happened to their mother. They mobilized and went for a reprisal attack on the husband’s mother. They met the man’s mother eating in her house and before the poor innocent woman knew what is happening, the blood-thirsty angry mob slaughtered her like a cow. They just cut her to death instantly.
“As I speak, the entire community is in mourning and in fear. We are not happy over what has happened in our community,” he said.
Efforts to speak to the president-general of Uwheru kingdom, Chief Cassidy Akpedafe, and the DPO of ‘A’ Division, Ughelli Police Station for confirmation of the story proved abortive as their phone numbers were not reachable. As at the time of filing this report, our source confirmed to us that the corpses of the two women had been deposited in the morgue awaiting police investigations.
