As Nigeria prepares to commemorate the historic June 12 Democracy Day a day that symbolizes the nation’s enduring struggle for democratic governance the Gokana Coalition is calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to seize this symbolic moment to reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to democratic values by restoring full democratic governance in Rivers State.
In a release signed by Amb. Dumkote Tombari (Chairman), Kingsley Vigaage (Spokesperson) and Hon. Bagia Francis Tornubari (Secretary General), the coalition urged President Tinubu to take bold and decisive steps to reinstate the suspended Governor of Rivers State, His Excellency Siminalayi Fubara, alongside other duly elected officials.
The coalition emphasized that such action is not only critical for the restoration of good governance and public trust but also essential to upholding Nigeria’s constitutional order.
The Gokana Coalition described the ongoing state of emergency in Rivers State as a dangerous precedent that undermines democratic norms and disempowers the will of the people.
They stressed that June 12 presents a timely and powerful opportunity for President Tinubu a leader whose political journey has long been associated with the defense of democratic ideals to demonstrate unwavering leadership by ending emergency rule and allowing democracy to thrive in the state.
The coalition also called on civil society organizations, democratic institutions, and the international community to lend their voices in advocating for justice, accountability, and the preservation of Nigeria’s democratic framework.
According to the group, solidarity at this critical juncture is essential to ensuring that Rivers State does not become a casualty of political instability.
The Gokana Coalition expressed confidence that President Tinubu widely regarded as a historic symbol of democratic resistance will rise to the occasion and use this year’s Democracy Day, June 12, 2025, as a turning point for the restoration of democratic order, unity, and justice in Rivers State.
