UNIPORT Demands Thorough Investigation into Death of Student

Management of the University of Port Harcourt (UniPort) is demanding a diligent investigation into the circumstances leading to the death of Mr. Godwin Akpakpan, a 300-level student of Computer Science of the university.

Akpakpan was reportedly killed during a shoot-out between personnel of the Nigerian Police Force and Nigerian Army close to the university campus.

Although none of the security forces involved in the fracas have claimed responsibility for the shooting, the university however, acknowledged that the deceased was a bonafide student of the school.

A statement by Dr. Sam Kpenu,
Head, Information, Publications and Public Relations of the university condoled with the family, friends and colleagues of the deceased.

Noting that it was actively engaging the relevant authorities, the statement however, called for diligent investigation into the matter and appropriate actions where necessary.

“The University is actively engaging with relevant security authorities to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. We expect that a thorough investigation will be conducted and that appropriate actions will be taken in line with justice and the rule of law.

The statement further appealed to members of the university community especially students to remain calm and allow the relevant agencies to carry out their investigations, adding that the university remains committed to the safety, dignity, and well-being of all students and staff.
