Unenurhie community, Evwreni kingdom in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State was in a festive mood recently as their president-general, Mr Peter Maison, was among those conferred with the title of ‘Justice of the Peace’ by the state ministry of Justice and Chieftaincy Affairs.

The event, which took place at Asaba, the state capital, drew together the celebrant’s friends, business associates, family members and community leaders in a joyous celebration.

Speaking to our correspondent during a reception at Mr Maison’s residence in Unenurhie town, the Otota (spokesman) of the community, Mr. Joseph Bicycle, who stood in for the traditional ruler of the community said, “We are indeed greatly honoured by the Delta State government by conferring on our president-general, the prestigious title of the Justice of the Peace.

“In fact, our president-general merited the title, considering his peaceful intitiatives and programmes in embarking on reconciliation with all aggrieved persons and parties in a recent crisis that would have torn the community into pieces and created enmity. In addition to this, he’s a peacemaker that preaches peace to every person or groups of people in the community. He deserved this title and honour.

“On behalf of the entire Unenurhie community, we are grateful to the Delta State government for considering our son and president-general worthy of this prestigious title. We hereby congratulate our president-general for this great honour and title of JP.”

In the same vein, the vice president of Unenurhie indigenes resident in Lagos State, Mr. James Okparikpu, in a telephone conversation said, “For those of us in Lagos State, it’s really a moment of celebration for us when we got the news that our president-general is now a JP. This is a white feather he has added to his cap. Therefore, my message to him is to ask him to do more for the development of the community as the president-general. As the justice of the peace, he is to maintain peace where there are troubles or problems amongst his subjects. On behalf of Unenurhie community in Lagos state, I congratulate him for this great feat, even as I also implore him to always uphold transparency and accountability in his government as usual.”

In his remarks during the celebration, the celebrant who was full of joy and appreciation thanked those that joined him to Asaba for the official inauguration at the government house and back home for the reception.

“Today, I’m overwhelmed with joy for this great honour done to me by the (Ifeanyi) Okowa administration for conferring on me this title of JP. This indeed showed that my little contributions to peace and development in my community and other neighbouring communities were being noticed by the Delta State government.

“Here again, I want to appreciate our own son in Asaba, Mr. Solomon Ishokri, for his great support that made this dream come true in my life. It’s almost like a dream in my eyes for the Delta state government to add me to the list of distinguished personalities and leaders across the state.”

The event was attended by creme de la creme of the community elders, women, youths and other distinguished guests from different neighbouring communities.
