It was celebration galore recently for the youths of Enurhie and Uruwheru quarters of Unenurhie town, Evwreni kingdom in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State as the scheduled youth election into the different positions was held peacefully at the quarter halls respectively in the community.

A series of keenly contested elections, conducted and supervised by a five-man screening/electoral committee, inaugurated for that purpose by the president-general of the community, Mr. Peter Maison, saw the participation of youths from each of the two quarters, and was witnessed by leaders of the different arms of government in the community, including elders.

Addressing the contestants into the various elective positions, as well as youths of the quarters before the elections, president-general of Unenurhie community, Mr. Peter Maison, who was present as an observer at the designated venues for the election, said, “I want to appreciate the entire youths of Unenurhie community for your peaceful disposition and maturity you have been displaying from the time of the screening of contestants, during campaigns and finally today, the day set aside for the elections.

“This is enough to convince everybody that you are on the part of unity, love and peace in the community. The era of leadership tussle or communal crises amongst youths or elders is completely over in this our community. We must move forward.

“Therefore, I want to advise every one of you that is present here to conduct yourselves in a peaceful manner to avoid rancour and chaos. Let me tell you, our neighbouring communities and the world around us are watching us today to get the outcome of today’s elections.

“Before now, it wasn’t like this in the community. It was mere selection by the leaders and not election as we want to experience today. Secondly, the splitting of the youth body into the two main quarters of the community is for two reasons. One, to decentralize the youth powers to enable them take their rightful positions as the leaders of tomorrow in the community. Two, to spread the youth leadership to every corner in the community. In other words, to carry all the youths along in the full meaning of leadership.

“All these decisions are taken by the leaders/elders to remove the name of violent and arrogance from the heads of our youths. Our youths are peaceful and highly talented young leaders. Do your election peacefully,” he said.

The educationist warned the youths against any act that would bring rancour or disrupt the electoral process. He however vowed on behalf of the committee to display maturity, sincerity, honesty, transparency and truthfulness in conducting and supervising the elections for the two quarters.

However, at the end of the elections for the two quarters, Mr. God’s power Orunuaduvwe of Enurhie quarters won the chairmanship position, while Mr. Johnbull Arhire Odophor clinched the position of the chairman of Uruwheru quarters.
