The Unenurhie community in Evwreni kingdom, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State recently paid a courtesy visit to CSP Benjamin Igometi, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), heading ‘A’ Division of Ughelli Police Station in Ughelli North LGA, Delta State Command.

The Unenurhie delegation, which was led by the Otota (spokesman) of the community, Mr. Joseph Bicycle, and the president-general of the community, Mr. Peter Maison, comprised all the organs and arms of government in the community.

Speaking during the visit, the president-general of Unenurhie community, Mr. Peter Maison said, “We are overwhelmed with joy for embarking on this official and courtesy visit to your office today. We heard that a new DPO is posted to ‘A’ Division of the Ughelli Police Station, and as part of our official duties as community leaders, we have to pay a visit to introduce ourselves with the new DPO. This is our major reason why we pay this visit to you today.

“Secondly, we also discovered that you are also our brother from Uwheru town, a neighbouring community to us and also related to Unenurhie community maternally. This is a big pride and honour to us for producing such a highly respected police administrator in the Nigerian Police Force. We are very happy that you are here for us.

“As you know, especially in the rural areas of the country, community leaders are confronted with a lot of challenges, ranging from insecurity, boundary disputes, internal/external communal crises, cultism, leadership tussle, herders/farmers crises, unemployment amongst youths and many other challenges. Therefore, as our new DPO, we are pleading with you to use your good offices to support us in community policing as to achieve the basic objectives of the Nigerian Police of securing lives and properties of Nigerians and the good people of Unenurhie community.

“Sir, your support is highly needed in this regard. I want to end this my short speech with no other remarkable gift to you than this letter of commendation of your excellent services to communities in particular and to humanity in general,” the president-general said.

Responding, the DPO of the ‘A’ Division of Ughelli Police Station, CSP Benjamin Igometi said, “I’m the happiest person today for receiving this leadership delegation from Unenurhie community, which is my own community and also part of my jurisdiction as the DPO of this police station.

“To start with, for community leaders, including women leaders and youth leaders, to embark on such official visit in unison, shows clearly that Unenurhie community is living in unity and peace. I must commend you for this great achievement in your leadership.

“Secondly, I want to put it on record that, since I resumed duties here as the new DPO of this police station, Unenurhie community is the first community in Ughelli North LGA to present to me a commendation letter. Without missing words, this letter is like a balm and grease to make me stronger and more diligent in my duties as a police officer. It will also strengthen me to become more dedicated in my services to communities under my station. I’m greatly impressed with this letter. It’s a remarkable and durable achievement in the service.

“However, I want to assure you that peace and harmony can prevail in our various communities here if community leaders are ready to work with the police. You, as community leaders should never take laws into your hands, but must report every criminal offence to the police station for thorough investigation and prosecuting. The Federal Government in collaboration with the different state governments is working out modalities for proper community policing. Our own in Delta State will soon work out. When that time comes, all communities in the state would be involved. Therefore, as community leaders, I still want to plead with you to join forces with the police to wipe away crime and terrorism out of our communities. Once again, I’m happy for this official visit today. Let’s keep partnering together,” he said.

High point of the visit was the presentation of a commendation letter of excellence to the DPO, CSP Benjamin Igometi by the president-general of Unenurhie community, Mr. Peter Maison amidst cheers.
