The people of Unenurhie community, Evwreni kingdom in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State have commemorated the death of one of their own, late Mr. Charles Oyovwe Obegor, after he was gruesomely murdered by some irate youths during a leadership crisis that rocked the community a year ago.
The low-keyed event, which was held in the community town hall, began with a memorial talk presented by Rev. Peter Atumremu to family members and community leaders that were present.
In his short but witty message, the man of God, who is also the vicar of St. Mark’s Anglican Church, Unenurhie thanked the families of the late Charles Obegor for not embarking on a reprisal attack but left vengeance for God. He however described the death of the young man as a sacrifice he (Obegor) chose to offer to the community to usher in lasting peace and total reconciliation for his people.
Atumremu concluded his message by praying for the immediate family of the deceased, and also for the community, to continue to enjoy peace and also move forward in life.
Speaking to our correspondent during the wreath laying at the grave side, president general of Unenurhie community, Mr. Peter Maison, said “Today makes a year since we lost our brother to the great beyond as a result of leadership tussle in the community. I can describe the late Charles as a saviour to this community.
“As a result of his death, we now understand what is meant by sacrificial leadership. I believe the death of our brother will teach us many lessons. Let me at this time thank the families of our late brother for being resilient all through the period. I still want to thank our youths for not taking the laws into their hands all through the period, even till this very moment.
“As a community, we will continue to organize a remembrance event like this to commemorate the fine legacies left behind by our brother. May his gentle soul continue to find rest in the bosom of the Lord Jesus Christ,” he said.
The deceased’s immediate elder brother, Mr. Stanley Obegor, who represented the families said, “Today makes it a year that we lost our brother. Though it was a great loss to our families, but we leave vengeance for God. God that allowed him to die has a purpose for it. I must commend the efforts of the community leadership towards the immediate family of my brother especially the great support of the president general and other concerned indigenes of the community at home here and abroad.
“Let me still thank the youths of the community, ably led at the moment by Mr. Friday Diamond, for understanding and wisdom in a time like this. This event was not planned as such but it’s expedient we do it just to remember the good works done by my late brother in restoring peace and love to this community. As a family, we have forgiven the culprits in this heinous crime against humanity. May the soul of my late brother continue to have peace with the Lord.”
Thereafter, wreaths were laid at the tomb by family members and friends after prayers were offered by the man of God. The event was attended by the community leaders and indigenes of the community mainly from Warri and Ughelli.
