Ohoror community in Uwheru kingdom in Ughelli North LGA of Delta state was again thrown into dread and fear as three young men in the community sustained various degrees of bullet wound from an attack from alleged herdsmen that have reportedly been terrorizing the community and others within Uwheru kingdom over the past five years.
The attack, which took place at Ohoror Secondary School, Ohoror in the evening hours of Wednesday March 9, 2022 put fear on the students and staff of the school and also put fear on the community residents especially the youths that went for the rescue mission when the attack occurred.
Narrating the ordeal to our correspondent, an eye witness who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “At around 3pm, we got a distress call from the side of our secondary school. Then some of the students especially those that want to sit for external examinations were still learning in the school. Few of us that first got the call just rushed down armless. When we got there, it was herdsmen versus the students of the secondary school. According to what they told us, two students went outside and before they knew, these herdsmen with sophisticated weapons suddenly came out from a nearby farm and seized one of the students for no reason. The other student managed to escape and brought the news to the town here.”
He further said, “As we got there, they demanded that we must buy them plenty foodstuff before we can talk of the process to release the one under their custody to us. This triggered the anger of some of our boys to break into them to forcefully remove the abducted student from their hands. As soon as our boys made the move to remove the student from their hands, the next thing we heard was gun shots from them.
“They directly fired on us and many people sustained injuries. However, the most severe ones were three young men. They are in critical conditions as we speak. They were rushed to an undisclosed hospital at Ughelli immediately the attack came. Our prayer now is for them to quickly respond to treatment and get healed on time.”
Others who spoke called on the President Muhammad Buhari-led Federal Government and the Delta State government to as a matter of urgency remove the alleged herdsmen from their farms, rivers and forests to enable them go peacefully about their agricultural jobs as the alleged herdsmen had been terrorizing the community and unleashing untold hardship on the residents especially the farmers over the past five years.
They said, “farming is our major occupation here and means of livelihood in the community”.
All efforts to speak to the Delta state police public relations officer, Mr. Bright Edafe, and the Ohoror community chairman, Mr. Augustine Igometi, on the attack proved abortive as at the time of filing this report.
