A non-governmental organization in Delta State, Think Global Initiative (TGI), have recently presented a public talk at Omavovwe Secondary School, Omavovwe-Agbarha in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State with a call on students and staff of the school to say no to violence and conflict.

Speaking on the topic of the talk, ‘No To Violent Conflict,’ before students and staff of the school, pioneer and CEO of TGI, Miss Ejiroghene Numa, dwelt on the meaning of violence and conflict, possible ways to manage violence and conflict and how to avoid violence and conflict in both the school and at home.

“Violence is defined as a forceful act, either physical or verbal that can actually cause harm to a person or group of people. Any action you take, either by harsh words or with the use of physical force against another, is described as violence; while conflict is defined as a state of disagreement or opposing interests or ideas between two or more persons. We have two types of conflict.

“They are positive conflict and negative conflict. Negative conflict is a conflict situation where we have different interests and desires. Then, positive conflict is a conflict situation where we come into agreement after disagreement or series of arguments on a subject, idea or interest. The agreement here is to create harmony and peace at the end of the disagreement or argument.”

The TGI pioneer and speaker, who is a trained criminologist, advised the school students and staff to desist from using violence and conflict to achieve their aims and desires in life. She also told them possible ways to manage violence and conflict situations like tolerance, avoid using harsh words, reconciliation and other ones.

Responding, the school principal who was highly elated over the huge sacrifice made by the non-governmental organization, thanked the speaker and head of the group, Miss Ejiroghene Numa and other members of her team for embarking on such sensitization and awareness programme on social devices bedeviling the country especially educational institutions at the moment.

“On behalf of my students and staff, I want to appreciate you for this huge sacrifice you have made for the betterment of our lives. The topic you just treated is timely, considering the security situation we are in today in the entire country. We are indeed grateful to your good work. Don’t ever relent in this good job, though it’s time and money consuming.

“This is where I want to call on our government and other corporate organizations to come to the support of this social movement formed by this young lady. She’s a young graduate and this is just her little ways of contributing to the success of education amongst children. We need to support her dream and vision,” he said.

The public talk was however concluded with a question and answer segment for the students, moderated and anchored by a member of TGI and also a respected priest in the Ughelli Diocese of the Anglican Communion, Rev. E.F.O. Ejenavi.
