Sylvester Oromoni: IYC to Constitute Committee, Hold Candlelight

Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) Worldwide has condemned “in its entirety” the death of 12 year old Sylvester Oromoni of Dowen College, Lekki in Lagos State.

Speaking with media men during a candlelight procession, held in honour of the deceased, president of IYC, Dcn. Peter Igbifa, lamented the ugly incident and called on the government to unravel the circumstances that led to it.

He said IYC will set up a committee to monitor the investigation process, adding that the perpetrators must be brought to face the wrath of the law. He also maintained that the incident must be thoroughly investigated and appropriate punishment meted to all those who are culpable.

He said: “God is watching and council will not hesitate to set up a team that will monitor the injustice. It is very disheartening that as a father, I put myself in place of the father of Sylvester Oromoni jnr. and send my child to school, only to be called to witness his death from brutality, which is tantamount to the recklessness of the school authority and high level of government’s negligence in the educational sector. I will not hesitate to thank the Lagos State governor for the swift action of closing down the school, while I call on him not to end it there.”

The IYC helmsman further took a swipe at the neglected educational system in Nigeria and called on the government at all levels to be proactive in revamping the ailing sector, while also pointing out that Sylvester Oromoni’s case will be a test for the judicial system in Nigeria. “Justice for Sylvester is justice for every father, mother and justice for every child in Nigeria,” he stated.

Other prominent guests, who spoke at the procession, including students and others, expressed their bitterness and charged security operatives to wade into the issue immediately, in order to bring the perpetrators to book.

It will be recalled that 12 year old Sylvester Oromoni jnr of Dowen College Lekki, Lagos died as result of internal injuries sustained after being bullied, battered and giving unknown substance to drink by five senior students of the college.
