By Paul Williams, Abuja

The Senate has Tuesday confirmed the appointment of a former deputy governor, Edo state, Pius Odubu, as the chairman of Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

The Senate also approved the nomination of Bernard Okumagba as managing director, Otobong Eden – executive director, Projects and Maxwell Okoh as executive director, Finance, and twelve others as state representatives.

But the nomination of Joy Nunieh as member of the NDDC board representing Rivers State did not scale through because she did not honor the invitations to her by the committee.

This confirmation was sequel to presentation and consideration of the report of the Senate committee on the Niger Delta chaired by Senator Peter Nwaoboshi.

In his remarks, the Senate president, Ahmad Lawan, urged the new board members to ensure the people of Niger Delta get value for their money.

Our correspondent reports that the Senate also confirmed the appointment of Justices John Tosho and Benedict Kanyip as chief judge of the Federal High Court, and president of National Industrial Court respectively.

This followed the presentation and consideration of the report of Senate committee on Judiciary chaired by Senator Opeyemi Bamidele.

Senate President Ahmad Lawan reiterated the need to improve the welfare of the judiciary in order to speed up dispensation of justice.

Meanwhile, the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, finally appeared before the Senate Tuesday, and said monetary policy will impact positively on the lives of Nigerians.

Emefiele who stated this before the Senate committee on Finance declined comments on the issues surrounding stamp duty collections, and said the matter is already in court.

Our correspondent reports that the committee later dissolved into executive session.

The CBN governor had twice failed to appear before the Senate committee on Finance which is investigating the inconsistent exchange rates used by the apex bank for three key projects under the Presidential Infrastructure Development Fund.
