SDN Harps on Tree Planting to Mitigate Climate Change

As Stakeholder Democracy Network (SDN), a non governmental organisation celebrates her 20 years of outstanding impact in the Niger Delta, the group harps on the importance of tree planting to mitigate climate change.

Addressing journalists at the tree planting site, SDN’s Dr. Samuel Paul maintained that planting of trees like coconut serve as food and also moderate the ecosystem, noting that trees take in dangerous chemicals in the air while giving out oxygen for man.

He explained that trees also prevent erosion and serve as wind breakers, as well as improving air quality and reducing the green house gases, adding that the functions of trees are so enormous, which also mitigate the impact of climate change especially on agriculture and food security.

Provost of Rivers State College of Health Science Management Technology, Prof. Franklin Nlerum, in his remarks, stated that the collaboration between SDN and the school gave birth to the planting of the trees.

He further said that the organisation using their 20th anniversary to plant trees is a welcome development.

Environmentalist, Kelvin Oduma, said his organisation also collaborate with SDN to educate the citizenry on the importance of tree planting. “We are celebrating with SDN to plant trees because it has many important factors,” he said.

Earlier, the director, Finance and Administration, Dr. Afolabi Ogumula, and Engr. Chris Nku have expressed the symbolic relationship between planting of tree and the environment.

One of the students, Success Moses said the importance of tree planting can not be over emphasize. Highlights of the event was the significant planting by the provost and others.
