School teachers to learn from college professors

Nearly 20 teachers of a Corporation school and two government schools will be benefited by a training programme which will enable them gain indepth knowledge in various subjects with the inauguration of the Rashtriya Aviskar Abhiyan (RAA) scheme here on Tuesday.

The School Education Department’s programme is part of the Rashtriya Madhyamik Siksha Abhiyan, under which the teachers will be trained by college professors.

According to the Chief Educational Officer A Anitha, the school teachers will be mentored by Loyola College. The schools are Garodia Girls Higher Secondary School, Choolaimedu and Government Higher Secondary School, MMDA colony, Arumbakkam and Chennai Higher Secondary School, Subarayan Street.

Twenty teachers from IX and X will be mentored in Physics, Chemistry, Botany, Zoology, Maths and Computer science. “It will be an activity-based learning through experiments as teaching from textbooks alone doesn’t make subjects interesting. First, the teachers will be mentored and then students will also get an exposure here in this institution,” she said.

S Vincent, Dean of Research, Loyola College, said the professors will identify the hard portions of the curriculum and explain them theoretically and practically.

Citing an example, he said modern topics like nano technology, green technology, cloning and genetic engineering will be taught to teachers by giving a theoretical and practical exposure by professors.

“After the training, the teachers will be confident in teaching those topics in schools,” he said. He further said the college has decided to throw open the laboratory facilities. The students will be brought to the college in batches.

Sree Sutha, a Physics teacher from Chennai Higher Secondary School, said, “This scheme will certainly help us. Often, when we are trying to teach students certain concepts, they don’t understand. By activity-based learning, there will be a clearer understanding of the concepts.”
