Sam Dede, Efe At PH’s Open Mic Event

Port Harcourt’s Open Mic event, newly introduced by the Port Harcourt Literary Society Library (PHLS), is currently gaining momentum, attracting the participation of the crème-de-la-crème of the literary industry in Rivers State and the Niger Delta as well.

In its bid to continue to encourage both the old and upcoming poets in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital, the organizers of the event, slated the last Friday of every month for the convergence of all and sundry in the literary society to share their God-given talents in the open.

Mr. Sam Dede, an actor and a household name in the Nollywood industry who came as guest speaker, spoke passionately on the labour of actors, actresses and the poets over the years in the country, said the time was ripe for them to reap from their efforts and no longer time for show making.

The guest poet, Mr. Efe Paul Azino, who thrilled the audience when he read piece from his book titled “For Broken Men Who Cross Often,” urged upcoming poets not to shy away or be afraid of failure when they have the opportunity to showcase their talents as the PHLS had provided.

Azino maintained that the only opportunity that could stand one out amid failures depend on his or her ability to explore opportunities. The musician turned poet told journalists at the end of the event that the passion he found in poet had occupied the musical aspect of his life.

The resident poet, Mr. Amu-Nnadi, while expressing his deep appreciation to the duo of Mr. Sam Dede and Efe Paul Azino said that their presence at the event made it thick and used the medium to announce the resolve of Shell Oil Company to take over the sponsorship of the event for the whole year.

In her view, the Programme Coordinator, PHLS Library, Ms. Nma Ubakanwa, who expressed delight on the level of turn-out at the event, called on upcoming poets in the state to avail themselves of the PHLS Evening Open Mic event.
