Rotary Club Donates Maternal, Child Healthcare Items to Primary Centre

As part of activities marking Rotary International’s Maternal and Child Health Month, the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco, District 9141, has donated medical items to the Model Primary Healthcare Centre, Igwuruta, in Ikwerre Local Government Area.

Among the items donated on Thursday July 13, 2023 were insecticide-treated mosquito bed nets, antenatal medications, oral rehydration salts, zinc tablets, Paracetamol, Albendazole, methylated spirit, Savlon, hand gloves and others.

Our correspondent gathered that the club was received at the health facility by the doctor in charge, Dr. Sokeipirim Akoko, who expressed joy over the club’s decision to choose his centre for such an intervention and promised that the items donated would be put to good use for the benefit of the patients of the community.

President of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco, Dr. Anthony Ikpor, charged mothers to ensure they sleep inside the mosquito bed-nets donated to reduce the prevalence of malaria infection in Nigeria, while stressing that the immunity of children is not as strong as that of adults and as such they should be protected from diseases.

Chairman of the club’s Maternal and Child Health Committee, Dr. Bieye Renner Briggs, gave a health talk on diarrhoea, malaria and the need for pregnant women to register for antenatal care and attend antenatal clinics to ensure positive pregnancy outcomes.

Dr Briggs also thanked “all those who made contributions towards the success of the intervention. My gratitude goes to the board of Directors ably led by the President, Dr. Anthony Ikpor, for the immense support and trust accorded to my committee. This intervention would not have been successful without the commitment and dedication of my committee members, I say a big thank you to you all”.

Treasurer of the Rotary club, Dr. Vivian Ozoekwe, also added her voice to the call for the women to give priority attention to their health and their children.

Our correspondent gathered that over 70 pregnant/nursing mothers and 50 children benefitted from the programme. One of the beneficiaries, Chituru Weje, thanked the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Eco on behalf of other beneficiaries.

While giving a vote of thanks, the chief matron at the health centre, Mrs. Chioma Mpigi, expressed delight over the donation and prayed God to bless the club and its members immensely.
