The Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu, leading a team made up of the deputy Commissioner of Police Operations, DCP Adepoju Olugbenga, and other officers of the command, has raided a kidnappers’ hideout located at Igwuruta in Ikwerre Local Government Area of the state, and arrested about ten suspected kidnappers.
The operation which took place at the early hours of Saturday 6 January, 2024, led to the combing of a bush behind the Adokiye-Amiesimaka Stadium at Igwuruta, and the destruction of 12 makeshift tents abandoned by suspected kidnappers terrorising Obiri-Ikwerre-Airport axis.
In an interview with journalists, DCP Adepoju Olugbenga, explained that the operation was a routine exercise.
He noted that “the Police mostly go to vulnerable points and areas where hoodlums terrorise the peace of the place.
“It was observed that within this period there are issues of hoodlums trying to ambush people going and coming from the airport.
“As part of the routine exercise as directed by Commissioner of Police, CP Olatunji Disu to ensure that Rivers State command is free of crime and criminality, the CP led the team to the place and distributed everyone to every angle of the bush.
“Behind the Adokiye-Amasemaka stadium, there were abandoned buildings that was under construction with good roads which makes it a good area for criminals to hibernate.
“From intelligence report it was gathered that some criminals come from there to cause havoc along ObiriIkwerre -Airport road axis.
“The area was combed by personnel of the command led by the Commissioner of Police and the Police was able to arrest about ten suspects. Some camps found there are shanties abandoned by suspected kidnappers were also destroyed.
“There is special concentration on the airport axis because of its importance to the state and the Police cannot allow criminal activities thrive there or any other part of the state,” he said.
He assured that the state Police command will continue to comb the place and other places criminals are hibernating to ensure Rivers people sleep with their two eyes closed.
The DCP of Police equally called on the public to assist the Police with useful information that can lead to identification and dislodging of criminal hideout in the state.
