The Rivers State Police Command said its operatives have arrested a couple, Mr. Chukwuma Iheanacho and his wife, Chialuka Iheanacho, alongside two other suspects, Mrs. Mercy Enyindah and Amaka Ewuzie over their alleged involvement in child trafficking.
The command in a statement issued in Port Harcourt on Friday by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Grace Iringe-Koko, said the arrest was made following a complaint by one of the victim’s mother that her child was missing.
SP Iringe-Koko said that in a follow up to the complaint, operatives of the Commissioner of Police Monitoring Unit swung into action and arrested one of the suspects, Mrs. Mercy Enyindah, whose confession led to the arrest of the couple.
The command’s spokesperson who noted that some of the victims (children) had been rescued, said efforts are on to ensure that a two-year old Jasper Friday who was sold in Asaba by the suspects, is reunited with the family.
According to her, “Following up on a complaint by Ms. Precious Friday of Ubima Community in Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, that her child was missing, operatives of the Commissioner of Police Monitoring Unit have arrested one Mercy Enyindah, who incidentally was said to have visited the complainant’s home shortly before the disappearance of the child.
“The arrest of Mercy Enyindah, who has confessed to having stolen the child and two other children, along with her accomplice, one Amaka Ewuzie ‘F’, between the weeks of February 16 and March 2023, has led to the arrest of one Chialuka Iheanacho ‘F’ and her husband, Chukwuma Iheanacho, in Delta State. Other members of the gang said to be in Imo State are still being trailed.
“While some of the rescued children have been reunited with their parents, efforts are ongoing to rescue Jasper Friday ‘M’, aged 2 years; sold at Asaba,” she said.
She however pleaded with members of the public to furnish the Police with information that could lead to the rescue of the child.
