As the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) began collating results for the March 9, 2019 governorship election in Rivers State on Tuesday, the results so far declared show the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and incumbent governor, Nyesom Wike, gaining a strong lead over his closest rival, African Action Congress’s Biokpomabo Awara
Out of the fifteen local government areas collated, Wike, who is seeking a second term in office, won in 13, with Awara winning the remaining two.
Wike got the highest votes in Andoni, Ikwerre, Port Harcourt City, Eleme, Opobo/Nkoro, Bonny, Okrika, Tai, Omuma, Ahoada East, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni, Emohua and Etche local government areas, while Awara gained victory in Oyigbo and Akuku-Toru LGAs.
This is as the Federal High Court in Abuja earlier on Tuesday dismissed a suit filed by the AAC and three of its members seeking to stop INEC from concluding the collation of the results of the March 9, 2019 governorship and House of Assembly elections in the state.
Justice Inyang Ekwo upheld the preliminary objection filed by the PDP to challenge the jurisdiction of the court to hear the case, while agreeing with the PDP that the Federal High Court lacked jurisdiction to hear the case seeking post-election prayers which could only be entertained by an election petitions tribunal.
