Rivers Eliminates Multiple-Taxation To ‘Drive Economic Growth’

Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike, has stated that his administration has tackled the issue of multiple-taxation in the bid to encourage economic growth, as telecommunications giant, Airtel Big Ltd, unveiled its 4G LTE network in Port Harcourt.

He made the declaration, during a courtesy visit by the management of Airtel Network Limited on Friday, urging corporate organisations to partner with the state government towards empowering the people.

He said: “We have worked hard to reduce multiple-taxation.  If you run into any problems with any local government area, get in touch and we will resolve them.

“If investors go away, our people will not be employed.  So, we will provide an enabling environment that is conducive for investors to thrive.”

The governor called on Airtel Network Limited to work with the state government for the successful hosting of National Festival of Arts and Culture.

Governor Wike charged corporate organisations to always employ Rivers indigenes in top positions and also avoid cutting corners in their operations.

He said that the state’s investment climate has improved because of the efforts of his administration to create opportunities for the people.

Earlier, the managing director of Airtel Network Limited, Mr Segun Ogunsanya said that the company operates 500 towers and has employed 2000 agents operating kiosks in different parts of the state.

He said that the team is in the state to officially launch its 4G Network, which he claimed is the largest and most efficient in the country, adding that Airtel despite not being the first to introduce the network in Nigeria has become the largest 4G network in Nigeria.

He said that besides Port Harcourt, Airtel has also launched the network in Ibadan, Awka, Onitsha, Asaba, adding that more cities in the South would soon be connected to its very fast 4G network.

Ogunsanya commended the Rivers State governor for his outstanding projects delivery which has developed the business climate in the state.

Speaking to journalists at the event, the Airtel CEO explained that the issue of dropped calls was a global challenge and not peculiar to Nigeria only, adding that efforts were on by operators to address the challenge.
