Rivers Committed To Revamping Syringe Factory ~ Health Commissioner

The new Rivers State commissioner for health, Prof. Princewill Chike, has restated the state’s commitment to revamping its syringe manufacturing plant at Rumuosi in Obio/Akpor Local Government Area.

The commissioner, who was on a visit to ascertain the state of the factory, said the Chief Nyesom Wike-led administration is determined to ensure the completion of the factory so as to achieve adequate production of syringe in the state.

Prof. Chike explained that the syringe factory will create employment opportunities in the state and reduce unemployment when completed, adding that the firm will also embark on the manufacturing of pharmaceutical and medical software.

He expressed hope that the firm will soon begin to export some of its products outside the country, and appealed to the host community to sustain the cordial relationship existing between it and the firm.

Prof. Chike pointed out that the syringe plant is the only World Health Organization certified reference point for manufacturing of syringe in the whole of the West African region. A development, he said, that has attracted patronage from many countries for the factory.

He however frowned at the Federal Government’s attitude towards assisting the state in funding the project, adding that the lack of financial support from the federal government has slightly hampered effective production at the factory, as he called for support from the government at the center.

Conducting the commissioner and his team round the project site, chief executive officer of Pan African Health Foundation and project director, Amenya Wokoma, said the factory has manufactured over N160 million worth of immunization syringes, and appealed for more funding for effective and efficient production.
