Rivers Auto Dealers Lament Low Sales, Seek Government Patronage

As economic hardship continues to bite harder, the Motor Dealers Association of Nigeria, Rivers State chapter has cried out over low sales and fears of business closure, describing their sector as one of the worst hit in the country.

The state chairman, Hon. Edyson Umeh who made these known while speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt over the week, added that they are facing a heavy downturn and are struggling to remain in business.

Despite all odds, Umeh said, they operate their business according to global best practice, ensuring that the satisfaction of their customers is placed as top priority. He explained that this is why it is better, cheaper and safer to buy vehicles in Port Harcourt than most other parts of Nigeria.

“Here in Port Harcourt one is sure of the source and condition of the vehicle before purchase and the sale is backed up with full duty payment,” he added.

Umeh who is also the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of National Motor Dealers Association advised car buyers not to patronize unregistered car outlets and ones that are not members of Motor Dealers Association to avoid being duped of their hard earned money.

The national official further urged the federal government to always carry the motor dealers association along where policies that have direct bearing on their business, especially those on importation of fairly-used vehicles, are being fashioned out.

The Motor Dealers state chairman commended the Rivers State Government for providing them with the enabling environment to operate their business with ease. While assuring their co-operation and support to the state through prompt and regular payment of their taxes and other business levies, he appealed to the government to consider using them when purchasing vehicles.

He further said that the absence of favorable and stable polices in auto industry is a major constraint to their business and called on the government to look into that.

He also appealed to the Federal Government to revive all the seaports in the eastern part of the country so they can import through the seaports instead of importing through Lagos ports, and at the end save cost.
