Rivers Assembly Gives Auditor-General Ultimatum, Warns Varsity Mgt

The Rivers State of House of has issued the “last warning” to the management of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education. This followed the university’s failure to appear before it on Tuesday 15 August 2017 even after the house had threatened to invoke section 128 and 129 of the 1999 constitution on the institution.

The Assembly said its request for the management of the institution to appear before it is in line with its function to check the level of compliance and implementation of the 2016 and 2017 budget allocation to ministries, departments and agencies in the state.

This was the second time the institution was turning down an invitation by the house

Chairman of the House committee on Public Accounts, Hon Major Jack who expressed anger at the non-appearance of the management of the institution warned that if they also fail to appear by Monday 21 August 2017, they should blame themselves for the consequences, while expressing satisfaction on the conduct of the exercise.

Hon Edison Ehie, who heads the Finance committee, noted that the exercise justified the fact that the 2016 and 2017 budget was not a farce

Some of the institutions which honored the Assembly’s invitation include; the Rivers State University, the Rivers State Universal Education Board, the office of the state and Local government auditors general and the Port Harcourt Polytechnic

In a related development, the Rivers State House of Assembly has given a 2-week ultimatum to the auditor general for Local Government to submit the audited report of the 23 local government areas in the state.

The chairman House committee on Finance, Hon Edison Ehie gave the ultimatum when the local government auditor general appeared before the joint committee on public accounts and that of finance.

He expressed worry that for over 2 years, the auditor general had been unable to prepare the report, noting that the 2 weeks grace would enable them get their facts right.

Defending himself, the auditor general for Local Government, Mr Friday Bema told the committee that he had carried out an audit for 5 local governments but was unable to do the rest because of the 2016 rerun election.
