Rivers APC Chair, Aguma, Holds First Virtual Meeting

… As Faction Dismisses Meeting As Charade

By Joel Anekwe

A new twist emerged at the weekend that further deepened the intractable crisis that has bedeviled the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressive Congress (APC) since 2018.

The new caretaker committee chairman, Igo Aguma, who was imposed on at the party last week by a Port Harcourt High court, presided over by Justice George Omereji, convened a virtual meeting purportedly attended by 20 statutory members of the party.

A press state by Livingstone Wechie, media adviser to Aguma, on the resolution of the meeting said the caretaker committee chairman, at the meeting, made it clear that the primary focus of the caretaker committee was reconciliation and the conduct of congresses in line with the Supreme Court judgement.

He said the executive committee mandated the chairman to consult widely and come up with a comprehensive draft working paper on the way forward for the party that would be deliberated upon at the next executive committee meeting.

“The chairman is using this opportunity to call on all APC members in Rivers State to support the caretaker committee to reposition the party back to its winning ways”, the statement added.

But in reaction to the meeting, a chieftain of the party and staunch supporter of the Rotimi Amaechi faction, Kingsley Wali, dismissed the meeting as a charade.

He said: “I’ve always believed that peace was possible in Rivers State branch of the APC. But with the nonchalant attitude of the leadership of the party in Abuja, I’ve come to the full realization that it was mere wishful thinking”.

The convener, Rivers Unity House (RUH) lamented that the leader of the party (referring to Adams Oshiomhole) “says he is for nobody, but his nonchalance is hurting everyone in the party – even those enjoying the temporary bliss”.

“So, what is happening in the party in Rivers State is not any different from what happened in Zamfara, Ogun, Imo, Edo and will happen in Ondo. Everyone is being blindsided by a leader who cared about only his own election. I consider all the zooming drama as rubbish and only paid agents will celebrate such charade.

“Like I said earlier, any organization whose leader has abdicated his leadership responsibilities, will suffer the fate APC is suffering nationwide”.
