A Gender and Human Rights defender, Mr. Josiah Egbilika has condemned the stigmatization of a deaf and mute child, who was brought to Azikiwe Police Division for safety, by some women in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Egbilika said the “uncharacteristic act” by the women reveals the inhumane nature of the society towards persons with disability especially the dumb.
The gender and human rights defender while expressing his disgust on the attitude of the women reiterates that women should be caregivers, compassionate and not antagonist towards deaf, mute children and persons with disabilities in general.
Mr. Egbilika relayed that such acts of the women should not go unpunished. He stated that their act is an abuse to the child’s right and called on the Nigerian Police to ensure justice is served.
The rights defender while thanking the National Coordinator, Centre for Basic Rights Protection And Accountability Campaign, Mr. Prince Wiro for his role towards ensuring the safety of the girl child, urged Civil Society Organizations and Non-governmental organizations to enhance their advocacy towards protecting girl child and persons with disabilities.
Mr. Egbilika tasked them not to be quiet in situations like this as such act is capable of downplaying their efforts towards the fight of achieving equity as regards human rights and portray Rivers State in a bad light.
